Retired Senior Chief EOD John Crabtree was seriously wounded in Iraq in an improvised explosive device blast that also killed his friend. He was transported to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where he learned he would be blind for life. A Navy Safe Harbor Non-medical Care Manager provided tremendous support, including facilitating his move to Georgia for therapy and helping him remain on active duty until his retirement date. Navy Safe Harbor is the Navy's lead organization for coordinating the non-medical care of seriously wounded, ill, and injured Sailors, Coast Guardsmen, and their families. Through proactive leadership, the program provides a lifetime of individually tailored assistance designed to optimize the success of the shipmates' recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration activities.
